In Kenya, demonstrations against President William Ruto escalated after the withdrawal of a controversial tax increase bill. In the capital, Nairobi, and other cities, police and soldiers used tear gas to disperse stone-throwing protesters. Demonstrators blocked and set fire to the main road leading to central Nairobi, with some placing empty coffins on the streets as a form of protest.
In Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city, hundreds of protesters marched, chanting “Ruto must go.” The protests intensified, resulting in vehicles being torched and workplaces being damaged by stone-throwing demonstrators. Similar unrest was reported in Kisumu, Nakuru, Kajiado, Mlolongo, and Migori, where protesters set vehicle tires ablaze in the streets.
