First In-Situ Byzantine Mosaic Unearthed at Monastery in Türkiye

 

A significant archaeological discovery was made at the Saints Constantine and Helena Monastery in Ordu, Türkiye. During excavations led by the Ordu Museum Directorate and Assoc. Dr. Seçkin Evcim, the first in-situ floor mosaic in Ordu province was unearthed. The mosaic, found within the church of the monastery, is believed to date back to the 5th or 6th century, showcasing geometric and floral motifs typical of the Early Byzantine period. The mosaic’s design features rhombus patterns and curved acanthus leaves, often adorned with fruit motifs and animal figures.

Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy praised the discovery, highlighting its importance for understanding the region’s Byzantine heritage.
