President Lee Jae Myung announced an 8.2 percent increase in the defense budget to 66.3 trillion won ($47.1 billion), stressing the need for stronger independent defense.
Speaking at Armed Forces Day, Lee vowed to modernize the military with advanced systems such as AI combat robots and drones, while boosting morale and safeguarding democracy. He also warned the army must never again be used for anti-democratic purposes, referencing last year’s failed martial law attempt.
