Kaja Kallas indicating her opposition to Iran’s plan to impose transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas made these remarks to journalists before the EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Luxembourg. Stating that Ukraine would be the primary topic of discussion at today’s meeting, Kallas said, “Tomorrow, we expect some positive decisions regarding the €90 billion loan. Ukraine really needs this loan, and it also shows that Russia cannot weaken Ukraine.” Kallas also stated that there would be discussions on the Middle East today, and that Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam would participate in the meeting and present an assessment regarding talks with Israel. She added that the foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states would assess additional steps Europe could take in the Middle East.

EU opposes transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz

Kallas indicated that the EU opposes Iran’s plan to impose transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “In the Middle East, of course, we also address what is happening in the war with Iran. It is clear that freedom of navigation cannot be replaced by a ‘transit fee’ system. We support diplomatic solutions. However, it is clear that other concerns must be addressed in addition to the nuclear issue. Issues such as missile programs, hybrid and cyber threats, support for proxy forces, and support for Russia are on the agenda. We are, of course, discussing these. We will also address developments in the West Bank.” Kallas stated that the EU held meetings yesterday regarding Palestine, with the participation of more than 60 countries, and said, “We are the biggest supporters of Palestine. We strongly emphasize that for stability to be achieved in the region, there must be a process owned and managed by the Palestinians.”
