For the third consecutive year, Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Strip remain entirely cut off from performing the Hajj pilgrimage due to Israel’s ongoing military offensive and strict blockade. With the Rafah crossing and other vital borders firmly sealed, thousands of hopeful pilgrims have been indefinitely stripped of their ability to fulfill a central pillar of Islam. Displaced residents like Huda Awad and Mahmoud Siyam expressed deep sorrow over being barred from visiting Mecca, highlighting that the closures also indiscriminately trap critically ill patients and students inside the enclave. As millions of Muslims worldwide prepare to travel to Saudi Arabia, Gaza’s residents are urgently pleading with the international community to pressure Israel into reopening the gates.
