The Sultan Qaytbay Mosque and Complex, a 15th-century masterpiece of Mamluk architecture, has officially reopened in Cairo’s historic Gamaliya district following a meticulous two-year restoration. Completed in November 2024 with backing from the U.S. Ambassadors’ Cultural Heritage Preservation Fund, the collaborative project successfully revived the site’s original stonework and hidden architectural colors. Originally built between 1472 and 1474, the historic monument is globally celebrated for its ornate gates, delicate carvings, and a rare stone dome adorned with intricate geometric star motifs. Now returned to its original splendor, the sprawling complex is drawing renewed interest from international tourists eager to explore one of Egypt’s finest examples of Islamic art.
