Migrant Surge Overwhelms Spain’s North African Enclave

A rapid influx of irregular migrants swimming from Morocco has overwhelmed Ceuta, a Spanish territory located in North Africa. Approximately 1,500 people have crossed the border in the past week alone, exhausting the city’s reception facilities and forcing hundreds to sleep outdoors. Urging the central government in Madrid to intervene, Mayor Juan Jesus Vivas warned, “We are facing an absolute humanitarian and social emergency.” Vivas highlighted the tragic recovery of 60 bodies at sea in recent months, stressing the urgent need for stronger migration controls to prevent further deaths. Spain’s Interior Minister is scheduled to visit the autonomous province tomorrow to assess the situation and coordinate a decisive national response.
