US to Open New Military Bases in Greenland

The United States is planning to establish two new military bases in Greenland under an impending agreement with Denmark and the island territory, according to Reuters. Slated to be signed today at the UN General Assembly in New York, the deal will reopen a Cold War-era facility in Narsarsuaq and establish a new outpost at Mestersvig. Though the official text remains unpublished, the White House noted that the pact “will ensure and protect the security of Greenland and the United States,” while Denmark emphasized that it places Arctic defense under NATO’s broader oversight. This strategic expansion marks a major shift for the US, which currently maintains only 150 personnel at the Pituffik Spaceport but once housed over 10,000 troops across 17 facilities during the Cold War.
