The Democratic Party has taken an early lead in the US midterm elections, securing 53 seats in the Senate and 220 in the House of Representatives, according to preliminary results. The party has made gains in traditionally Republican states, including Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, Ohio, Iowa and North Carolina, potentially reshaping the balance of power in Congress. If the results hold, Democrats will win a Senate race in Kansas for the first time in 94 years and in Texas for the first time since 1988. Democrats are also closing in on a potential gubernatorial victory in Texas, which would mark their first win in the state in 36 years. The elections will determine control of Congress for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.
