The Anatolian region has been a cradle of civilizations throughout history, owing to its strategic location surrounded by three seas, excellent connections between Europe and Africa, fertile soil, favorable climate, and abundant water resources.
In ancient times, Anatolia was known as ‘Asia Minor’ due to its position as the westernmost part of the Asian continent. It was during the Roman era that Anatolia began to be called ‘Anatolia,’ signifying ‘The place where the sun rises.’ This region has witnessed numerous invasions and migrations over the centuries.
Archaeological excavations and extensive scientific research have revealed several civilizations in Anatolia during the Early Age (2000 BC to 600 BC), including the Hittites, Hattians, Phrygians, Lydians, Ionians, and Urartians. Additionally, Anatolia played host to other significant powers throughout history, such as the Persians (543-333 BC), the Alexander Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire (395-1071), the Seljuk Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
