Australians go to the polls for general elections

Australians are going to the polls for general elections. The voting process to elect the Australian House of Representatives and Senate members started at 08:00 am local time and will continue until 06:00 pm. The Liberal-National party coalition government, which has been in power for 9 years, and the main opposition Labor Party are competing in the election. The election between current Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese is expected to be contentious.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Morrison spoke to the reporters after casting his vote in Sydney. “Today Australians are making a big choice about their future. Australia needs is someone who knows how to manage money, knows how to deal with our national security interests, knows how to be able to move forward and secure that strong economy, because a strong economy means a stronger future. It’s just such an honor to be able to represent the local electorate of Cook. It has been an incredible honor to do that and I look forward to continuing to do it,” Morrison said to press.

In order for a government to be formed in Australia, parties must obtain at least 76 of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives. The Liberal-National coalition government won 76 seats in the last election in 2019, while the Labor Party reached 68 seats.
