Barricades set up in city square in Kyiv

A temporary ceasefire has been declared to allow civilians to flee Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, as well as Kharkov, Mariupol, and Sumy, Russia announced earlier today. Civilians are awaiting evacuation at assembly points set up throughout the cities after the ceasefire went into effect at 10:00 a.m. local time.

In the heart of Kyiv, security has been beefed up in anticipation of a close-quarters combat. In the town square, barricades and sand trenches were erected. Ukrainian soldiers were stationed at strategic locations throughout the city.

UN Declares Famine in Gaza

The UN Integrated Food Security Stage Classification (IPC) officially declared a famine in Gaza City and surrounding areas, warning that over 500,000 people face “catastrophic” conditions. Another 1.7 million are in emergency levels, with nearly all agriculture destroyed and food access critically restricted since March.

UN officials said the famine is “entirely man-made” and blamed Israel’s obstruction of aid deliveries. Human rights chief Volker Türk warned that deaths from starvation may constitute war crimes. Israel rejected the report, calling it based on “Hamas’s lies.”
