Black January Martyrs Commemorated in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan held a ceremony yesterday at the martyrs’ cemetery in Baku to commemorate the martyrs who died in the massacre that took place after the Soviet army entered Baku on January 20, 1990. The ceremony started with the arrival of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his wife and citizens laid flowers at the monuments afterwards.

“We bow our heads to the souls of not only the martyrs of January 20, but also the martyrs of the 1st and 2nd Karabakh Wars. The January 20 tragedy will remain in our hearts and memories even if 100 years have passed,” said Vugar Abdullayev.

The USSR army launched a military operation against Azerbaijan on the night between January 19 and January 20, causing the deaths of 149 people and heavy injuries to 744 others.
