COP28 Summit Commits to Fossil Fuel Phase-Out by 2050

At the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, nearly 200 nations reached a landmark decision to transition away from fossil fuels—a first in history. This pivotal moment occurred during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), uniting world leaders and delegates in Dubai, UAE, the host city.

After extensive negotiations, an agreement was achieved, heralding a shift from fossil fuels. Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President, confirmed the consensus among ministers representing approximately 200 nations, endorsing the agreement’s call for a departure from fossil fuel reliance.

Outlined in the UAE-published draft, the agreement advocates for an equitable, methodical transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems. It emphasizes urgent actions in this decade to achieve a net-zero status by 2050, aligning with scientific recommendations. Notably, the text urges expediting the phase-out of coal energy, tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, and doubling the annual energy efficiency rate.
