death toll from greece train crash rises to 46

The death toll from the tragic accident in which a freight train and a passenger train collided in Greece’s Tempi district has risen to 46.

At the news briefing, fire department spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakogiannis stated that the search and rescue effort at the accident site continues today. Vathrakogiannis added that they were using special machines and that the operations were being carried out in tough conditions due to the intermittent rain.

According to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, “tragic human error” caused a deadly train collision. Mitsotakis, who considered Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis’ resignation honorable, announced that the presidents of the Greek Railways Authority (OSE) and its subsidiary ERGOSE had also resigned.
