death toll rises to 24 in ecuadorian heavy downpour and landslides

The number of people killed rose to 24, and injured others to 48 after a flood that affected several neighborhoods in the west of the Ecuador’s capital, a city that was hit by a heavy downpour, with record rainfall, authorities said. Search and rescue efforts continue in the region for missing citizens, authorities added, and a 3-day mourning was declared in the country. Quito Mayor Santiago Guarderas said that the rainfall in the region reached 75 liters per square meter, making it a record rainfall in the region since 2003. Power outages experienced in some neighborhoods as power poles have been damaged.
