The Italian Coast Guard reported that the death toll from the incident in which a migrant boat crashed into the rocks off the coast of Steccato di Cutro and sank has risen to 58. The number of survivors is still 80. The Italian authorities reported that most of the migrants, including children, are citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Iran.
According to the Missing Migrants Project of the International Organization for Migration, 20,333 people have lost their lives or disappeared in the Central Mediterranean since 2014.
