Democrat Abdul El-Sayed Becomes the First Muslim Elected to the US Senate

In a defining US midterm election, the Democratic Party secured control of both chambers of Congress by riding a “blue wave” through traditional Republican strongholds. Capturing 54 Senate seats and surpassing the 218 required for a House majority, Democrats ended decades-long Republican dominance in critical states like Texas, Ohio, and Kansas. Beyond shifting the balance of power, the election delivered unprecedented milestones for diversity in American politics. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed made history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, while Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in the nation’s 250-year history.
