Palestinian engineers have begun clearing explosives left behind by Israeli forces in areas they withdrew from in northern Gaza. Following Israel’s partial withdrawal from the Netzarim Corridor on January 25, around 500,000 displaced Palestinians returned to the region, where many now live in makeshift tents atop the rubble of their homes.

Ali al-Nadi, an official at the Palestinian Ministry of Interior, said engineers are working nonstop to remove unexploded ordnance and improvised explosives, which pose a serious threat to civilians. Human rights groups have urged international support for demining efforts, warning that some explosives were allegedly hidden in humanitarian aid supplies.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said they are “moving towards a good decision” on granting an export license for Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Türkiye, though no final decision has been made yet.

Merz met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. At their joint press conference, Starmer said the UK-Germany relationship is entering a “new era,” addressing key issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We’re working for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, along with careful humanitarian aid,” he said.

On Ukraine, Starmer emphasized the need to bring Putin to the table for an “unconditional ceasefire,” while Merz highlighted U.S. willingness to provide weapons financed by Europe. He added, “Germany wants to contribute significantly.”

Merz also noted that defense ministers are discussing air defense and other military aid for Ukraine.
