The EU has announced new measures in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Josep Borrell, European Union Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, issued a joint press statement on additional measures to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. “Today’s meeting was informal, but we reviewed the situation and discussed and agreed to provide new support to the Ukrainian military. We will provide weapons aid to the Ukrainian army to help Ukraine. We will continue to help until Ukraine defeats Russia. These aids amount to 450 million euros. Fuel and other aid will also be provided. This is the first time we are helping out. Poland became the center of this support. Military aid will be delivered to the Ukrainian army by land,” Josep Borrell said.
The EU will close its airspace to Russian planes, ban Russian state media outlets RT and Sputnik, and buy and send weapons to Ukraine, according to Von der Leyen. On February 24, Russian troops entered Ukraine, prompting the country’s president to declare martial law and a series of announcements by Western countries that Russia would face severe economic sanctions.
