European Farmers Block Belgian-Dutch Border During Protests

Protesting against strict environmental regulations and reduced agricultural support in Europe, Belgian and Dutch farmers gathered on the Belgian-Dutch border. Belgian farmers in Arendonk and Dutch farmers in Hazeldonk set fire to the barricades set up on the border. The protests caused long queues on highways, and authorities recommended not traveling to Belgium unless necessary.

European farmers are opposing the pesticide and herbicide bans in the EU’s Green Deal and a new agreement to import more beef from Brazil and Argentina. They state that it is extremely difficult to compete with these countries because they do not adhere to strict rules regarding animal welfare, and they are crushed by the increase in production costs, strict environmental regulations, and unfair competition.
