Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Seoul Central District Court after being convicted of leading an insurrection over his 2024 declaration of martial law. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
The court ruled that deploying troops to the National Assembly and attempting to obstruct its powers amounted to rebellion and severely undermined democratic order. Several former senior officials, including ex-Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, also received lengthy prison sentences.
