American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, becoming the first American to hold the position. Chosen in the third vote of the conclave in Vatican City, he took the name Pope Leo XIV. Addressing the crowd at St. Peter’s Square, he called for unity and compassion, saying, “Peace be with you.”
Prevost, 69, born in Chicago, has served as a missionary in South America and most recently led the Vatican office overseeing bishop appointments. He succeeds Pope Francis, who died on April 21. U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the new pope, calling it “a great honor” for the country.
