Forest Fires at several points in Greece

Forest fires forced the evacuation of four villages yesterday in Greece. Rafaella Tzima, Spokesperson of the Greek Fire Service, said that high temperatures, strong winds and dry weather triggered the fires. “Today was the first hard day of the fire season. All of Greece is now at high risk. Therefore, we may need to restrict entry to national parks and forests for a while,” Tzima said.

In the Peloponnese, nearly 200 firefighters, many municipal employees and volunteers with 2 helicopters worked throughout the night to respond to the forest fires that started yesterday afternoon. The forest fire, which started near the Portes Village in the east of the Achaia region, spread to Ileia in the south with the effect of the strong wind. Four villages were evacuated, including the settlements of Karagianeika and Dalaboureika. An investigation team was formed to investigate the suspected fire in Portes Village. The fires were brought under control in the morning.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
