Vatican Spokesperson Matteo Bruni said in a written statement, “I regret to inform you that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 09:34 am at the monastery of Mater Ecclesiae in the Vatican,” and added that more information will be provided as soon as possible.
Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics, had announced that former Pope Benedict XVI was sick and asked for prayers for his recovery on 28 December.
