After the announcement of a regulation that would raise the retirement age to 64, French people took to the streets to demand the government retract the decision.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the French far-left Party of Unyielding France, called on youth organizations to gather in Bastille Square to protest the regulation. Several youth organizations and some student associations also supported the call.
During the demonstration, against which extensive security measures were taken, the demonstrators damaged the windows of banks and ATMs.
