Fukushima NPP begins discharging treated nuclear water into sea

The controlled discharge of radioactive waste water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan has begun. TEPCO, the company that built a 1-kilometer underwater tunnel from the power plant to the Pacific Ocean for the discharge, announced that the discharge of 1.3 million tons of treated water stored in approximately 1,000 tanks began around 13:00 local time. In the first discharge operation, which will take 17 days, 7,800 tons of water will be released into the sea. Radioactive material measurements will be made in the waters off the power plant after the discharge, and the results will be shared with the public.
