Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota (28), who played for Liverpool FC in the English Premier League, died in a traffic accident in Spain along with his brother Andre.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We have lost two champions. Diogo Jota was more than a great player; he was a beloved figure in the national team and community.” UEFA was asked to observe a minute of silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euro match against Spain.
Liverpool FC also confirmed the news, requesting privacy for the grieving family. Jota, who had married just 11 days ago, is survived by his wife Rute Cardoso and their three children.
Jota scored 147 goals in 444 matches for clubs including Paços de Ferreira, Porto, Wolves, and Liverpool. He earned 49 caps with Portugal, netting 14 goals, and won multiple titles including the Premier League and UEFA Nations League.
