German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the humanitarian situation in Gaza is “no longer acceptable” and called on Israel to enable increased aid efforts. Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz emphasized Germany’s readiness to do more in Gaza but stressed that “the Israeli government needs to make it possible.”
Merz distanced himself from the phrase “unconditional support” for Israel, stating that Germany supports the country but also voices concerns. He underscored the importance of international cooperation, including the EU and the US, in resolving the conflict.
Addressing criticism over Germany’s differing approaches to Israel and Russia, Merz said, “Israel has been defending itself against aggressors, while Russia started a war in violation of international law.” He also noted that no region currently preoccupies German foreign policy more than the Middle East.
