Kayıhan Osmanoğlu, the grandson of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II, visited the Süleymaniye Complex in Damascus to pay respects at the graves of his grandfather Sultan Vahdettin Han and other dynasty members. This marked Osmanoğlu’s first visit since 2010, prior to the Syrian civil war.
Expressing his emotions, Osmanoğlu described Sultan Vahdettin as an “oppressed sultan” and emphasized the significance of preserving Ottoman heritage. He thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for maintaining the complex, noting plans for restoration.
Osmanoğlu shared hopes to eventually move Sultan Vahdettin’s grave to a new complex being built in Ankara, which will include a mosque named after the late sultan. However, he stressed that such a decision rests with the Turkish leadership.
