Ali Bozoğlan, a 55-year-old earthquake survivor in Hatay, has been living in a cave for two years after losing his home in the devastating 2023 earthquake. Despite offers from local authorities to relocate him to a container home, Bozoğlan chose to stay, saying, “Not everyone can live in a cave, but I do because I am different.”

The earthquake, which struck Kahramanmaraş and heavily impacted Hatay, destroyed thousands of buildings and claimed around 25,000 lives. Struggling psychologically after the disaster, Bozoğlan discovered a cave in Samandağ’s Yaylıca neighborhood, where he found peace and solitude. He now considers it his home, reaching it daily by motorcycle before climbing on foot.

Bozoğlan, who meets all his needs in the cave, says he is content with his life away from society. “People find it strange, but I am happy here,” he said.
