Historic Ottoman Pool Discovered During Mosque Restoration in Türkiye

During ongoing restoration work at the Muradiye Mosque in Bursa, Türkiye, an octagonal pool believed to be 600 years old was unearthed. The historic water feature was originally commissioned by Sultan Murad II and remained hidden from public view for centuries. Restoration officials confirmed the discovery after researching library archives and noted that the pool likely provided sound insulation and acoustic relaxation for the complex. Excavation teams also found a mysterious underground channel system beneath the foundation, prompting further research to determine if it served as ventilation, heating, or drainage. Imam Muhammet Lütfi Taşci expressed his excitement over the find, stating that “a brand new page has been opened” for Ottoman history and the city’s memory.
