Iraqi authorities have begun efforts to recover the bodies of over 2,000 victims executed and dumped into the Hasfa Sinkhole by ISIS between 2014 and 2017.

Mosul Governor Abdulkadir al-Dahil called the site “the largest mass grave in Iraq and perhaps the world,” stressing the need to bring justice to victims’ families. The excavation, expected to take a year, will also extend to mass graves in Tal Afar and Sinjar.

Located south of Mosul, the Hasfa Sinkhole was used by ISIS as an execution site, with some victims thrown in alive. Iraqi teams previously faced delays due to landmines planted around the area.
