Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva elected as Brazil’s new president according to the initial results of the runoff polls. The Worker’s Party head took the 50,82 of the votes and left the Liberal Party candidate Jair Messias Bolsonaro behind.
The aggressive attitude of both candidates towards each other before the elections caused polarization among the voters and increased the tension in the country, which has been struggling with increasing inflation and poverty in recent days.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva claimed, on the election day, that the Brazilian Federal Highway Police (PRF) stopped buses carrying their voters from reaching the polling stations in the northeastern parts of the country. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which administers the elections in Brazil, stated that no citizens were deprived of their right to vote, while the Federal Highway Police (PRF) said that they followed the court orders.
The public showed great interest in the contentious elections. More than 124 million citizens voted in the country, where the number of voters exceeds 156 million.
