At the foot of Mount Amanos in Hatay, a ‘burning stone’ has intrigued locals and visitors alike for years, fueled by a continuous gas leak from underground.
Located in Kurtbağı District, 22 kilometers from Arsuz, the stone has been burning for an unknown period, with legends dating back to the Roman Empire. Mustafa Kale, a 56-year-old resident, shared, “No one in this village knows when the burning stone started. My late grandmother told me about it when I was a child.”
The village, with a population of over a thousand, sees numerous visitors from across Turkey, including cities like Izmir, Ankara, and Adana. The burning stone remains a popular tourist attraction, with travelers frequently visiting to witness this natural phenomenon.
