NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that a Ukrainian defeat in the ongoing war could undermine NATO’s deterrence, with the cost of rebuilding it potentially reaching trillions. Speaking at a panel during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Rutte urged NATO nations to increase defense spending and support for Ukraine, emphasizing the global implications of the conflict.
Rutte stated, “If Ukraine loses, the price to restore NATO’s deterrence will far exceed current spending, not in billions but trillions.” He highlighted the geopolitical nature of the war, noting cooperation among Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, and called for unified action to prevent aggression in the 21st century.
He also stressed the importance of continued U.S. involvement in Ukraine, adding that European nations should be ready to finance arms support if a new Trump administration maintains assistance.
Rutte praised proposed U.S. sanctions on Russia, emphasizing their potential to weaken the Russian economy and reduce its war budget. He called on Europe to strengthen its sanctions to further impact Russia’s ability to continue the war.
