natural disasters worldwide in 2022

There have been numerous shocking natural disasters in various countries around the world in 2022. On January 14, the Hunga Tonga underwater volcano on Tonga’s Hunga Ha’apai Island erupted, causing widespread panic. Tsunami warnings were issued in a number of countries, including Canada, Australia, the United States, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, New Zealand, Fiji, and Japan.

A state of emergency was declared in April due to forest fires in Arizona’s Coconino region. While 766 homes were evacuated in the area, at least 7,000 hectares of land were turned to ash.

Flooding was caused by heavy monsoon rains that began in Pakistan in June wrecked one-third of the country. The flood disaster killed at least 1,700 people and injured 12,867, according to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).

Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in the US states of Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina in September, killed 134 people. More than 2.5 million people in Florida lost power due to strong winds.

Hurricane Julia caused flooding and landslides in Central and South America in October. A landslide caused by heavy rains killed at least 50 people in Las Tejerias, Venezuela. The hurricane affected 457,300 people in Guatemala, where 1,165 people were evacuated and at least 14 died. Five people died in Nicaragua, where at least one million people were left without power. It was reported that two people died in Panama and ten people died in El Salvador.

On November 20, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Cianjur region of Indonesia’s West Java province, causing widespread devastation. According to the Indonesian National Disaster Agency, 321 people were killed in the earthquake. The earthquake affected a total of 73,874 people, and 62,628 houses were destroyed.
