Northeast US Choked by Dense Smoke from Canadian Forest Fires

Severe smoke from forest fires in northeastern Canada has enveloped New York and Pennsylvania, creating the most dense smoke cloud in the region in 20 years. The air quality index in New York reached a dangerous level of 342, while Pennsylvania exceeded 400. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the distribution of one million free masks and canceled outdoor activities due to poor air quality. President Biden urged people to listen to authorities for their safety. Actress Jodie Comer experienced difficulty breathing during a show in New York.

The Canadian forest fires have consumed 3.8 million hectares of land, leading to the evacuation of 120,000 people. Quebec is the most affected region, with 437 ongoing fires across the country.
