Marius Borg Hoiby, the 29-year-old son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape. The Oslo District Court ruled that Hoiby assaulted two women—one in 2018 and another in 2024—who were unconscious or asleep, while also convicting him of additional charges of mistreatment and negligence. Alongside his prison term, the court ordered him to pay approximately €57,000 in compensation to four victims, though he was ultimately acquitted of two other assault allegations.
While Hoiby is not an official member of the monarchy, the highly publicized trial has cast a heavy shadow over the Norwegian royal family. The Royal Palace has declined to comment on the verdict, which arrives during a difficult time for the family as Princess Mette-Marit battles a severe illness and awaits a lung transplant.
