Palestinian Football Head Refuses Handshake with Israeli Official

Tensions flared at the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver when Palestinian Football Federation President Jibril Rajoub refused to shake hands with Israeli Vice President Basim Sheikh Suliman. Despite repeated urging from FIFA President Gianni Infantino to share the podium, Rajoub firmly declined, stating he would not legitimize someone brought to “whitewash” Israeli actions. Palestinian Vice President Susan Shalabi strongly criticized Infantino’s push for a handshake, arguing it absurdly undermined Rajoub’s preceding speech concerning severe rights violations. This public standoff closely follows Palestine’s recent appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over FIFA’s ongoing refusal to sanction Israeli football clubs operating in the West Bank.
