As part of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, Israel withdrew from part of the Netzarim Corridor, allowing Palestinians to return to northern Gaza on January 25.

Returning residents, many displaced for months, found widespread devastation in Al-Zahra. The city’s homes, infrastructure, schools, mosques, and universities were reduced to rubble following intense Israeli airstrikes. Emotional scenes unfolded as residents searched through debris to retrieve belongings and mourned the loss of loved ones. Lifeless bodies were also discovered in the ruins.

The attacks on Al-Zahra, which began on October 19, 2023, forced the population to flee after over 20 homes were destroyed in a single night.
