Peruvian authorities took action against environmental disaster due to oil spill on Peru coasts that occurred after an underwater volcano eruption in Tonga. Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced that urgent and serious actions will be taken to punish those responsible for one of the biggest environmental disasters in history that occurred on the coasts and sea of Peru after the oil spill in the region from the La Pampilla refinery. President Castillo also declared a climate emergency in the region.
Meanwhile, Castillo condemned the environmental disaster caused by the La Pampilla refinery operated by the Spanish company Repsol and visited one of the most affected beaches in the region. “The ecological damage to our coastline is inadmissible. The State has ordered criminal, civil and administrative actions, in order to protect the country’s sovereignty and well-being. We are facing one of the largest ecocides that have occurred on our coasts and sea. The Government assumes the role of punishing those responsible for the damage that tragically affects the flora, fauna and communities that are endangered and deprived of their livelihood,” Castillo said after his visit to the oil spill affected beach.
While wanting the support of Ministers and citizens regarding the environmental disaster, Castillo promised on the government would take serious steps on the situation. Peruvian President also signed a supreme decree that included the government’s actions to mitigate the damage.
On the other hand, spilled oil from refinery covered 1.7 square kilometer of land, according to the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency’s (OEFA) reports.
