Peter Pellegrini Becomes Slovakia’s New President

According to unofficial data published after the second round of the presidential election held yesterday in Slovakia, Social Democrat candidate and former prime minister Peter Pellegrini left his rival Ivan Korcok with 53.55 percent of the votes and became president.

Pellegrini, the leader of the Hlas (Voice) party, one of the partners of the coalition government led by Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is accused of alienating the country from the European Union and NATO, argues that Slovakia should not adhere to the directives coming from Washington and Brussels and should pursue its own interests and opposes providing military support to Ukraine because of his pro-Russian identity.
