Clashes that began between prisoners at Litoral Prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador last Saturday escalated and turned into a riot. Eighteen people lost their lives and 11 were injured in the riot. The riot spread to other prisons in the country. At least 96 guards were taken prisoner and numerous prisoners went on a hunger strike. Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency for 60 days in all prisons.
