In the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Center in Sarmada district in Syria’s rural Idlib, the wounds caused by the war on civilians are being healed. In the center, civilians suffering from neurological diseases due to an accident, attacks or nervous system disorder are supported by experts. Every month, approximately 90 people benefit from the center, which has three different sections for women, men and children. Director of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Ataa Hatip said, “Patients in general apply to our center due to nervous disorders. We implement a regular treatment program with various instruments and our expert staff. Apart from this, we also meet their needs such as wheelchairs, walking sticks and adult diapers.”
Muaz Abdulhadi, 30, who was hit by shrapnel in his right shoulder as a result of the attack on the area where he lived, said, “I applied to this center two months ago. My bone was shattered because shrapnel hit my shoulder. Therefore, my right side was paralyzed. I am currently undergoing treatment. Thankfully, the process is progressing well.”
Mohammad al Safani, a 3rd year student at Hayat University Faculty of Medicine in Idlib, explained that he did his internship at the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center and said, “We have the opportunity to put the theoretical education we have seen at school into practice here. Among the cases we see most frequently are patients with spinal cord disorders and semi-paralysis.”
The center, which is active 6 days a week, employs 6 specialist personnel and 52 interns.
