Right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella has won Colombia’s presidential runoff, narrowly defeating leftist Iván Cepeda by a margin of 250,000 votes. Securing 49.7% of the vote against Cepeda’s 48.7%, the president-elect addressed his supporters, declaring his victory the start of a “new era” for a safe and prosperous nation. De La Espriella campaigned heavily on security and economic reforms, promising to halt negotiations with criminal organizations, expand the energy sector, and lower taxes. Meanwhile, Cepeda, who was backed by outgoing President Gustavo Petro, stated that his camp will formally accept the outcome once the electoral commission completes its final verifications. Over 26.3 million Colombians participated in the highly contested election, with approximately 427,000 voters casting blank protest ballots.
