Veysel Karagöz, a 66-year-old saddler in Sivas, inner -astern Türkiye, is one of the last representatives of his fading profession. Having started at age 7, he has spent 59 years crafting and repairing horse equipment, now primarily serving javelin athletes and historical film sets.
With the decline of horse-drawn carriages following the rise of cars and tractors in the 1970s, saddlery has nearly disappeared. Karagöz, who learned the trade from his grandfather and father, says apprentices are rare due to decreasing demand.
Despite the challenges, he remains passionate about his craft, producing saddles and horse gear that are now also used as home decorations. “If I didn’t love my job, I wouldn’t do it,” he said, vowing to continue his work as long as he can.
