Serfs’ Emancipation Day commemorates the democratic reform launched in 1959, which put an end to the region’s feudal serfdom and liberated over a million serfs in Tibet Autonomous Region in Southwest China, accounting for more than 90 percent of its population at that time.
Tashi Norbu, a local resident, stated that it has been almost 15 years since March 28 was announced as the day to remember the emancipation of one million serfs in Tibet. He personally experienced the improvement in their lives, and he feels very happy from the bottom of his heart. Similarly, Garsel, another local resident, mentioned that their children enjoy free education from kindergarten to senior high school, and residents, including farmers, herdsmen, monks, and nuns, have good social security, such as medical care and elderly care. Their life is getting better and better.
