Siirt’s Centuries-Old Clock Finds New Home

The historical clock, a 1000-year-old treasure housed in Siirt’s Ulu Mosque in Türkiye, has undergone meticulous maintenance and repair by a dedicated family across four generations. Recently restored, this ancient timepiece found its place atop the clock tower at 15 July Democracy Square, a testament to its enduring legacy.

Originally part of the historical Grand Mosque, the clock was relocated to the clock tower in 1970, an 80-step climb through narrow passages. Özcan Özel, volunteering for the clock’s upkeep, diligently tends to its maintenance, treating it as a cherished heirloom. “As the last in line, I continue the tradition passed on by my ancestors, treating the clock with the care and attention of a child,” Özel explained, highlighting the clock’s continual need for maintenance due to its age.
