Ecuador’s investigation into the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio revealed that six Colombians were detained in relation to the murder, and another was killed during a clash with security forces. Interior Minister Juan Zapata identified the suspects and listed seized weapons and vehicles.
Villavicencio, known for opposing corruption and gangs, had recently revealed threats from a drug-linked gang leader.
